"Gaelic Supreme"
Premium Crafted Graphite Fly Rods

Reflect Anglers Demands For Classic Fishing Performance
Made in the USA

Gaelic Supreme rods are designed to travel with you.
Wherever you go, there you are...and with your rods.

The length of the pieces are the maximum length for travel. Conveniently, this makes ideal length rods. It is also very convenient to be able to take 6', 9', 12', 15', 18', 21' and 24' rods all in one small rod case.
We offer a small range of rods for the angler that is seeking the ultimate experience in fly fishing: single handed dry fly rods and double handed spey fishing rods were our first priority. To this range we are adding single handed large river rods and double handed shooting head rods. This small range of rods cover the principle sizes and styles to cover most of the serious fly anglers requirements.

"Gaelic Supreme" Paul Brown Spring Creek Rods

The Gaelic Supreme Paul Brown Spring Creek Rod is offered for the discriminating angler who has been searching for a graphite rod to compliment his bamboo rod collection. These rods are not intended for the beginner, they are crafted for an angler with a subtle awareness of a truely delightful rod action and fine craftsmanship in manufacture and finish. The spring creek rods presents a fly with a delicacy and accuracy that draws a quiet whistle from the caster. To provide flexibility to use the rods on smaller streams and different occasions, we add an extra butt section 18" shorter than the standard section which makes a rod one line weight heavier, eg: a 9'-3" #3 wt rod will have a second butt to make it into a 7'-9" #4 wt rod.

Our tribute rods are crafted from the optimum materials for each section of each particular model rod.

Rods are a medium brown, have custom silk wraps and custom guides. The Spring Creek handle is a delicate cork grip developed by Paul, similar to a Ritz style cork grip but shorter. The custom nickel silver reel seat is a downsliding skeleton seat. We place a removable rubber end protector on the nickel silver end cap. The rods are totally custom made for the connoisseur.

Gaelic Supreme Paul Brown Tribute Rods have a brown rod bag and a codura covered case with the Serial #, Model #, Length & Line Weight on the butt and the serial # on each section. Travel cases for multiple rods are an optional extra at time of purchase.

Some Observations On Single Handed Fly Rods

The advent of fibreglass and then graphite has changed the manufacturing process of fishing rods. Production lines have moved from hundreds of men and women hand making cane rods to machines and a few men and women making larger numbers of rods.
Both good and bad things have resulted from this change. There is less personal contact and so there is less sensitivity in rod making. There are opportunities for better quality control and quality assurance with more automation.
Advertising and image selling has become a big part of flyfishing. This is good when used responsibly and bad when abused. Human nature assures it will be cyclical as a whole and because flyfishing is a passion rather than a simple hoby, the core of experienced anglers will always be drawn to the good of the sport.
Rod action and casting techniques have been developed around two platforms:
1. Modern materials and production techniques.
2. Demonstration casting at shows and exhibitions.
It is unfortunate that most new flyfishers are exposed initially to show casting and the obligatory ego of the demonstrators. Demonstrations of casting a #4wt, 9' rod thirty yards over the end of the demonstraion pool is all too often the final memory of a would-be flyfisher. When the prospective buyers of fly rods now test a #4wt, 9' rod, the first they do is strip off 20 yards of line to make sure the rod will cast far enough for their ego to be unbruised. Flytackle Dealers at the Trade shows exhibit identical tendancies, with the bigger egos handling saltwater rods with stripping techniques as well as casting techniques. All this has little to do with fishing and the efficiency and effectiveness of the rod for actual fishing.
Modern materials have created opportunities to develop lighter fishing rods with predictable and very accurate reproducable actions.
Single handed rod actions are usually described as a speed of either parabolic or progressive action. This is convenient and very near the truth for the production companies. The constant churning out of new models and new materials every year to keep up sales numbers is so similar to the automobile industry that it is alarming. Developing a fly rod used to take many years and effort by many people, now it is a yearly requirement.
Mac Brown wrote a book called "Casting Angles", which I hope will be read by all flyfishermen. It is a milestone in flyfishing literature insomuch that it is based on independant, unbiased research. The book has turned most existing ideas upside down and inside out. Through exhaustive research and experimentation Mac developed his ideas on casting, rod action, line requirements, etc.. He found that beginners and advanced fishermen preferred exactly the same rod action and the very same rod, a horrible shock to the ego of some advanced casters. He found that the English definition of a dry fly rod and wet fly rod was exactly the wrong way round: a dry fly rod should be a slower action than a wet fly rod. How could the English be wrong for a hundred years?
Is it a coincidence that Paul Brown developed dry fly rods thirty years ago that meet Mac Browns theories 25 years later?
Scotsmen invented golf and now they come to plague flyfishing. Where will it end?
Perhaps it's because I went to Strathclyde University, Glasgow. Perhaps it's because I try to convert building owners in the USA to sustainable energy systems in my real life. Perhaps it's because I'm from Leicester in England, home to the "Leicester Terriers". Anyway, I saw profound merrit in Paul Brown's rods and similar profundity in Macs Book, so I followed my nose to have the rods made and it has only taken 11 years to produce the first rod.

Gaelic Supreme single handed rods are 3 piece, 9' - 3" long rods, except the #1 weight, which is 8' - 3". There are optimum lengths for casting and fishing, two of those lengths are 9' - 3" and 8' - 3". It is convenient that a 9' - 3" rod breaks down into the maximum carry-on length pieces.

Dry fly rods with a slower than medium action that is a cross between a progressive and parabolic action. A development that takes a great deal of time and care to produce has the elation of success that a quick solution cannot give. We are developing a wonderful range of fishing rods that delight the most critical of anglers. One interesting point is that for the experienced angler, a #2wt rod is his favourite because he can catch big fish on small flies. Anglers have become illogical about catching big fish on light tippets, they use tip actioned rods and are surprized when the fish keeps breaking them off. A butt actioned rod will preserve a light tippet and allow the angler to exert more pressure on a fish than a tip actioned rod. I call the #1, #2, #3, #4 and #5 weight rods dry fly rods because they are for small to medium flies.

Our heavier rods are #6, #7, #8 and #9 weight rods. They are medium to heavy in line weights and are a medium action rod that serve very well as utility weight rods for large dry flies to large nymphs. The action of the rods become slightly less butt actioned as the weight of the rod increases, starting at a real medium action in the #6 weight rod.

Single Handed Rods.

These rods are designed to simulate a medium action bamboo rod at about a quarter of the weight. These rods are for the serious flyfisher to appreciate and use. These rods will not cast a country mile, but will cast with the sweetest action and present a fly with the most delicate and subtle presentation. Combine one with our Gaelic Supreme Silk fly line for the ultimate in presentation.
Playing and landing a fish with these rods is a delight for the serious angler, the rods apply great power while protecting delicate tippets. Landing big fish on our #1, #2, #3, #4 and #5 weight rods is the ultimate experience. The concept of a full flex rod bringing in big fish quicker is both old and true. Tip actioned rods do not allow the angler to put much pressure on a fish for fear of breaking the tippet, whereas a full flex rod allows tremendous pressure to be exerted on fish and bring them to the net quickly.
Gaelic Supreme rods are a dark green (forrest green) colour. The wraps are a forest green also.

The reel seats are custom designed for our rods.
The reel seats are a lightweight downsliding skeleton nickel silver.
A note about our sliding band reel seats: they hold a reel foot very well because the sliding band has an internal taper so the band has good contact with both the reel foot and the seat. We have never had a problem with our reelseats coming loose, that only seems to happen when the sliding band does not have an internal taper.

The short cork hand grasps are a comforable shape for fishing, a style similar to the Charles Ritz design.

Gaelic Supreme rods have the Serial # on each section and come complete with a green codura covered case and a rod bag. Travel cases for multiple rods are an optional extra at time of purchase.
